What is OSM?
OSM, or On-Screen Marking, is CBSE’s newly introduced digital answer sheet evaluation system in which students’ board exam copies are scanned and assessed online by examiners instead of being checked physically. Under the process, evaluators log into a secure digital platform to review scanned answer sheets, award marks electronically, and submit scores directly through the system.
The move is aimed at improving transparency, reducing manual errors, speeding up moderation, and ensuring more uniform marking across centres. However, since the system is being implemented on a larger scale for the first time, the scanning, uploading, verification, and digital coordination processes are likely taking additional time, which may be contributing to the slight delay in the declaration of CBSE Class 12 results this year.
According to officials, the OSM system has been introduced to make the evaluation process more streamlined and error-free by digitally assessing scanned answer sheets. The board is also expected to use multiple verification layers under the new system to maintain accuracy and consistency in marking, especially for large-volume examinations such as Class 12 board exams.
